Challenge

The swimming pools in Schönmünzbach Park, which were due to be refurbished, had already been sandblasted and cosmetically refurbished by the time they were put into operation, but not to the client’s satisfaction.

Sandblasting of concrete surfaces has opened up the capillary pores in what was previously a dense concrete structure. This has led to increased water ingress into the concrete structure, as well as a deterioration in the concrete’s alkalinity and, consequently, the natural protection against rust provided to the embedded reinforcement. 

To protect the concrete structure on site, beconart had to take measures to seal the capillary pores in the concrete on site.

It was necessary to repair numerous cracks along the edges of the wall copings, concrete spalling on the internal walls of the swimming pools, variations in the height of the pool walls, and air pockets in the concrete surface. All exposed concrete surfaces must be inspected to ensure they are level and to identify any damaged areas,
