Shuttlebahn tunnel

The object: Light Rail Tunnel
location: Karlsruhe

Our task
A few months before the opening, several thousand square meters of exposed concrete surfaces were designed and treated in detail by our teams. The cable openings created to illuminate the illustrations, fire protection cladding and technical fixtures were then integrated into the structure in great detail. Aggregates were plastered and stones with abutting edges were painted. Winding wires were removed, openings in the walls near the escalators were sealed, and panels were seamlessly integrated into the overall look.

Challenge
Processing thousands of individual areas of exposed concrete at seven stations with multiple exits in a short time - in the center of the city - was an enormous challenge. This complex task required a masterful effort in logistics, execution, and coordination. The teams had to work meticulously and coordinate seamlessly to complete the forged concrete surfaces on time. Every step of the process was crucial to create a harmonious overall look and ensure that all details were perfectly coordinated. Implementation in an urban environment also requires careful planning so as not to affect ongoing operations while ensuring the highest levels of quality.

Light Rail Tunnel

The light rail tunnel, completed by allmannwappner, began construction in 2004 and opened at the end of 2021. The seven stations with transfer rooms and two classes of rooms lead passengers through the mezzanine to homogeneously exposed concrete surfaces and a white-lit platform level. A consistent common pattern connects the densely wooded concrete walls and quiet terrazzo floors up to the southern curve. Ingo Maurer's pendant lighting concept in the color circle complements the design, so that people can let the events of the city unfold in peace and reverence.
