The object: Likidi Border Control Tower
The Plikidi border control tower is a historical marker commemorating the division of Germany
Location: Plikidi, L\u00fcneburg Region, Lower Saxony

Our task
The restoration of a listed former border tower near Plikidi on the Elbe River presented a special challenge. The border tower, which was built with precast concrete parts, steel brackets and cast-in-place concrete formwork, showed significant cracks, especially on the aerial side, as well as cracked and partially open joint areas in the precast joints. The reinforcing bars of the precast concrete elements were partially close to the surface due to production and partially corroded.<\/p>

Our tasks included restoring the said exposed concrete structure and adding the missing areas on the exposed concrete surface. Finally, we performed concrete beautification and metal color retouching to bring the structure back to its original condition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Challenge<\/strong>
The exposed concrete restoration of the listed Plikidi border control tower on the Elbe River had to be carried out under low temperatures and harsh weather conditions. As a precautionary measure, the entire structure was filled with insulation and heated using heaters. The temperature of the structure and the surrounding area was continuously monitored and documented during the restoration and exposed concrete renovation of the property.\u00a0<\/p>

This included repairing the damaged concrete areas, including carefully exposing and removing rust from the steel, applying corrosion protection and reconstructing the removed areas, matching the original surface finish and color.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The restoration and repair of listed exposed concrete structures requires the interplay between preserving the historic material, maintaining the architectural and technical data of the building and complying with the structural aspects, guidelines and specifications for the protection of monuments.<\/p>

Our goal when restoring exposed concrete buildings with listed buildings is to keep interference with the original building fabric to a minimum and use materials for repairs that are technically and aesthetically compatible with the existing condition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
